Mike, thats good to know (especially your time approximation....even though I have some skepticism).

You actually weren't the Stranger we were talking about since our meeting was more accidental but yo should be 'that stranger' soon. It would be good to swap ideas on search vs. social. But for the sake of this public board, I will reiterate now that its not that I dont think its important - its that I'd rather focus on social than stress about the other as I think it serves our needs best now.

Maybe, just maybe, I'm also just getting over-excited for our David vs the Google Golaith story

Of course, my name is Adil. ;)

There's no reason you can't do both search and social. Is this really what you want?

http://www.google.ca/search?q=site:mycitylives.com&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=KDy&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&filter=0

Leaving SEO, the site looks awesome. I'll keep my eye open for stuff to video :P

Hey Adil!

I'm assuming i'm the stranger here.

I don't mean to suggest SEO is be-all-end-all here, but rather it's low hanging fruit. Especially with a site that's so content centric like yours.

It'd be as simple as having permalinks with the title and meta description rendered statically (instead of anchor->javascript that updates page title), and submitting a dynamically generated sitemap to google using webmaster tools.

You'll be showing up in all sorts of searches for toronto locations and businesses for what's likely half a days work.

In the news today, there was alot of talk about how 55% of Americans are not happy at work:

http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2010/01/05/american-grow-less-and-less-satisfied-at-work/

There are multiple explanations for this but among them is definitely the lack of culture which is a motivating force. Great initiative on your part to consider the importance of it now and how it can make such a difference!

I'm glad you asked Mark as this is the area where I think 101 stands to improve the most in. My impression is that the organizers hopes were that attendees would go 'spread the word' (about Toronto's challenges, services, awesome Mayor, etc.) and this alone would justify 101's value. There is a grassroots element that i like to this but with so much potential in the room, I couldn't help but feel like we left a lot on the table when we walked away.

101 was new so I don't know if there was much, if any planning, into post-101. I do expect that next time around, there will be something more than a speech about it 'actually being the beginning and not the end'. Well, I expect that speech but anticipate (hope), that the organizers realized that they can leverage more from those who attended.

One simple idea would be to close out 101 with an open house for the many organizations in the city who are need of citizens to help in different ways. The issue of homelessness, for example, interested a large amount of attendees. Why couldn't organizers from a shelter or two be there with a "sign up to help" sign? People at 101 seemed inclined to help but at the end weren't sure where to go - bridging that gap would be valuable. If this idea is too intensive, the same results could even be achieved by simply asking participants what area/topics/issues they would like to be further involved and following up with them after with places or people to connect with.

What are your thoughts? It sounds like you have an opinion on what qualifies something as being successful in its attempts for engagement.

I'm very interested in what exactly the participants in Civics101 feel that they are being engaged TO DO. The question I always ask when someone talks about citizen engagement is this: What are we engaging citizens to do? I'm interested in your perspective on this and what you heard from other Civics 101 participants.

wow...never heard even heard of such a campaign! Yuck!! does this provoke the the question of free speech however? can there be a line drawn within free speech? is a campaign even considered a form of free speech regardless of how effective it is? It appears as though content doesn't matter as much as the effect/affect is has on the general public, but is it still a good way to promote discussions of issues still prevalant in today's society? Hmmm....to be honest I really don't know.

Sure falling inlove can inspire some creativity...like... for example, I seem to recall myself exclaiming to someone I once fell inlove with "oh the possibilities are endless with you!" ... but as my mind began to rapidly fill with creative thoughts; processing my desire to do just about anything with that person I so loved, I realized that just by fantasizing won't exactly help me reach my goals. My creative thought process raced ahead of me and in the end and I never got to do what I wanted because there was no time for absolutely everything especially when love runs its natural course of dissipating...it was actually impossible to say the least, to even imagine that everything can be accomplished within a given time.... so yeah, creativity can only come to life if we stop fantasizing about it, and activley do something about it. Now that's a major challenge at this day and age!
